ROY CHAN FOUNDATION, previously known as the RURAL KIDS CHINA, INC., was founded by American educator and entrepreneur Roy Chan on December 2009.
It was established as a means to focus on making a positive impact on the lives of
under-privileged rural children by providing K-12+ education programs in mainland China and improving the educational experience of young Chinese students in rural regions.
As of today, the Foundation has acquired a large funding through public and private donors as well as non-governmental organizations. The foundation consist of a president, an advisory board as well as seven academics who serve on various committee roles.
Mission
The primary mission of the Roy Chan Foundation is focused on ensuring that funds are available for
under-privileged youth who live in the rural cities within mainland China. It is important to the Foundation that young people, especially
between the ages of 9-14, have the necessary resources to succeed in life both academically and personally.
The things that Foundation has identified as most important to helping
young Chinese students would be to make sure they have access to some or
all of the following:
- Educational tools such as books and computers
- Mentoring and Tutoring Services (life skills, guidance, academics)
- School-based Nutrition Programs
- Early Childhood Education
- Dorm Management Programs
- Recreational Opportunities (sports equipment, team and individual sports)
Mr. Chan is also
committed to granting funds for various research projects, health care and medical clinics
as well as education and awareness programs related to cancer, smoking and HIV/AIDS,
especially for minorities.
The Foundation is a currently allocating funds to: Stanford University - Rural Education Action Project(REAP), International China Concern, Yale-China Association, China Institute for Higher Education(CIHE), WorldVision, Samaritan's Purse, and Greeneace China.
